"Even just a hundred miles off the coast, we're seeing things that they put on the corner of the maps - you know, 'Here lie monsters,'" Sönke Johnsen, a professor of biology at Duke University and the leader of the expedition, told The New York Times. On June 19 researchers on a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration expedition captured a giant squid on camera in a stunning 25-second video in Gulf of Mexico waters 100 miles southeast of New Orleans. Tsunemi Kubodera of the National Science Museum of Japan, HO/AP The photo was made out of the video they filmed. A long squid, seven meters (24 feet) long, died in the process of being caught. The research team, led by Kubodera, has succeeded in filming the giant squid live, possibly for the first time, at the surface as they captured it off the remote island of Chichijima, which is about 960 kilometers (600 miles) southeast of Tokyo. In this photo released by Tsunemi Kubodera, a researcher with Japan's National Science Museum, a giant squid attacking a bait squid is being pulled up by his research team off the Ogasawara Islands, south of Tokyo, on Dec.
